Bruce Highway Upgrade – 4 Lanes to 6

  • Sector | Infrastructure
  • Location | Queensland

Hy-Tec and Fulton Hogan are building better to upgrade the Bruce Highway, a key piece of infrastructure that connects Queenslanders. The upgrade includes expanding the highway from four lanes to six, and the construction of three waterway overpasses. To deliver for this project, the team needed to consider the hot Queensland weather, and the strength requirements to support the overpasses and road itself.

To meet the project performance requirements, the specification called for a mix with a high portion of slag, a recycled supplementary cementitious material (SCM), which was used as a cement replacement in the concrete mix.

Our technical team created a custom Futurecrete mix for the project which:

  • Considered hot weather conditions to eliminate the risk of thermal cracking
  • Remained super workable, allowing the concrete to be placed with ease
  • Achieved pilings with diameters of up to 1200mm
  • Replaced cement content with slag, reducing the embodied carbon of the concrete

Hy-Tec can specifically design concrete solutions utilising a range of raw material combinations that are specially tailored to your project performance requirements.
