Normal Class Concrete

Normal Class concrete, as defined by the Australian Standard AS 1379, is a type of concrete mix designed for general construction applications. It is categorised based on its compressive strength, which typically ranges from 20 MPa to 50 MPa at 28 days, making it suitable for most residential, commercial, and light industrial projects.

Normal Class concrete is versatile and can be used for footings, slabs, pavements, driveways, and general structural work where the conditions are not extreme. The mix proportions for Normal Class concrete are standardised to ensure consistent performance in typical construction environments, and it can be adjusted slightly to meet specific project requirements like workability and durability.

This type of concrete is also highly adaptable, with the ability to incorporate different types of cement, aggregates, and additives to suit a range of climates and site conditions. Its versatility makes it a reliable choice for construction across Australia, offering predictable performance for projects where specialised concrete properties are not required. Normal Class concrete provides an efficient and effective solution, balancing strength, durability, and ease of use.

FAQs

What does curing do to my concrete?

Curing involves keeping the freshly poured concrete moist for a short period of time (usually 3-7 days). By keeping the concrete moist, it allows the bond holding the aggregates and paste to get stronger. If left to dry out, concrete doesn’t harden properly, so it is best to begin curing just after finishing the concrete surface.

By curing your concrete it is stronger and more durable, while being less prone to cracking.

How can I remove stains from my concrete?

Everyday stains caused from grime can be removed by washing and scrubbing, and even washing with a water jet in some cases.

Other stains such as oil, rust or paint, can penetrate into the concrete surface and be hard to remove. These kinds of stains may be removed with special chemical stain removers. Others may be covered with concrete paint.
